Apparently You Can Teach a Cat New Tricks

I was recently having a conversation with my one of my friends when the topic of cats came up. He has two, and he happened to mention that they’re both potty trained.
Yes, potty trained.
I looked at him in disbelief and asked him how the heck he managed that. Sure, cats are smart and all, but potty trained? It didn’t seem possible. Then he showed me a picture. (Yes, he actually had a picture on his phone, which means he gets a lot of reactions just like mine and needs the picture as proof!) And sure enough, the cats are potty trained.
In addition to rewarding them with treats, he used a special litter box pad that went over the toilet seat as part of the training process. Every other week he’d remove a portion of the pad until there wasn’t anything left, and voila! They were trained. Once I got over the shock of it all it started to make more sense, but the concept is still so strange to me.
Sure, it’d be nice not to have to clean the litter box, but my cat Wellington already has a lot of human-like behaviors. For example, he’ll sit at the kitchen table with us when we eat dinner, will sprawl out on the couch afterwards and watch TV and he always makes a serious attempt to get some playtime with my iPhone. In his eyes, he’s just “one of the guys.” And that’s OK, but when it comes to the bathroom, I already have to share it with my husband – not sure I want to share it with my cat, too!
Would you ever consider potty training your cat?
