My cat likes to jump up on the kitchen counter top. Everything I have tried has failed to work. What can I do to make her stop?
It’s a normal behavior for cats to seek out elevated surfaces and the kitchen counter tops the list. A cat may jump up there because of the food smells, or because there’s a window there that has the best view, or to interact with her owner. Some cats jump up there for safety as well because it gives them more of an advantage when it comes to viewing the environment.
The technique I use involves a plastic carpet protector. This comes in a roll and it’s the type that people put down when showing new houses to protect the carpet in the heavy traffic areas. You can find carpet protectors in your local home improvement store or major discount chain store. Get the kind that has nubby feet on one side. The feet are used to prevent the protector from sliding on the carpet but we’re going to use it for another reason.
Cut the carpet protector into smaller sizes to fit on your counter. The smaller pieces will also make it more convenient to store. Place the carpet protector pieces on the counter with the feet side UP. This makes the surface less appealing for the cat to stand on.
Keep the carpet protector on the counter whenever you aren’t in the kitchen. This remote way of training works well because you don’t have to be there for it to work. Many times owners use a spray bottle of water to deter the cats from the counter but those smart kitties learn to just wait until the owners leave the house and then back on the counter they go.
After about a week or two of consistent training with the carpet protectors, your cat should get the message. Since cats love elevated places though, be sure to create an allowable and equally appealing high spot for your kitty. Put a cat tree near the window or set up a window perch – something that will satisfy her need to be up high.
